Jet Setting

Posted by Jessica on Jul 18th, 2008

Hello!  We are still in the States, and since we arrived almost three weeks ago, we have been to California, Illinois, Wisconsin, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.  We have been going almost non-stop as we’ve hang out with family and caught up with friends.  Adam has been taking shmillions of photos, and you can see them here.  I’ve chosen a sampling below.

After visiting my brother and sister-in-law in Long Beach (which we already told you about), we relived my Americana youth in West Chicago, Illinois with my parents.

While in Illinois, we took a side-trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to visit our friends the Van Severens…

and another to Chicago to hang out with Daniel and Elizabeth.

Now, in Nashville, we’ve seen Adam’s family…

and lots of friends.

There was one more side trip to Georgia to see Adam’s Granny Rose…

and friends Sajee with her new baby and Sarah & Robert.

We’ll be heading to the beach with both sets of parents on Saturday, and after a week there, it’s back to Seoul!

Whew.

Long time no see, Long Beach

Posted by Jessica on Jun 30th, 2008

Hello from Long Beach, California!  We hadn’t seen Jeff and Meg, my brother and sister-in-law, since we first left for Korea two years ago, so it’s very good to spend some time together.  It’s a short visit, but we’re packing in some great experiences.  We arrived on Friday afternoon and went out to dinner at Ruby’s Diner at the end of a pier on Huntington Beach.  What better way to reorient ourselves to American culture than with burgers, cheese fries, root beer and chocolate malts?

We spent yesterday, mostly on foot, exploring Jeff and Meg’s Long Beach neighborhood (they live two blocks from the beach) and cool village area called Belmont shores.  We started with a community pancake breakfast at a park with a group called “I (heart) Long Beach”.  I do heart Long Beach.  It’s a beautiful, sunny, beachy, arty, relaxed and diverse city.  At the breakfast, we met a really warm older couple, and the husband fought in the Korean war, stationed just north of Seoul.  We shared lots of stories and compared our experiences.  In the afternoon, Adam and Jeff happened upon a convention of pirates (or at least pirate enthusiasts) who took siege of the pier.

In the evening, after a delicious home-cooked meal (thanks, Meg!), we wandered to Retro Row and visited the openings of a few hip shops and saw a live band playing surfer music in a surf shop.  We missed the poetry reading that we were headed for at the Open cafe (in fact, they were closed), but we still had a great conversation with the shop owners.

Today was an especially fun day.  We went to church in the morning, and after the service, I helped Meg out with the 2-year-olds class.  It was so much fun!  The weather was great, and we went out to the playground.  I got tackled by energetic little, beachy blond tykes.  Then we went inside to sing songs and color pictures.  Meg was really good with the kids.  I think I had as much fun as them.

After church, we had lunch with some of Jeff and Meg’s good friends.  I’ve met some of their friends on my previous visits, and I know their friends Tom and Meredith from back in Illinois.  They have an adorable son, my new buddy Charlie from the 2-year-old class who was having a clumsy day and was sporting new scrapes on his nose from playtime.  It was nice to see Jeff and Meg’s friends again and eat pizza in the sun.

This afternoon, we headed with Jeff and Meg to the new Broad Gallery at the LA County Museum of Art and saw some cool contemporary art.  After we explored the museum, we brought our picnic dinner next door to the La Brea Tar Pits where there are active pits bubbling up tar all throughout the park.  In the middle of LA.  Wild.  We found a grassy spot, laid out a blanket, and had delicious sandwiches with sparkling cider.  The weather was perrrrrfect.  Then we drove down the road to the Farmer’s Market which was closing as we arrived, but we still got to meander a little and window shop.  What a great day!

We’ve had a full few days, and each has ended with Adam and me falling asleep in the back of the car on the ride home, like sated children.

One more full day here, then on Tuesday morning, we head to Illinois!  See you soon!

Dancing around the world

Posted by Adam on Jun 23rd, 2008

This is a most awesome video that our friend Tyler Kimbro hipped us to today. (Thanks Tyler!) It actually made both of us kind of choked up. I guess it’s just seeing the amazing diversity of human life around the face of this beautiful planet, paired with the spirit of celebration and joy that is common among us all that makes it so moving.

Sure makes me want to hit the road right now! Oh wait, we are hitting the road!!! On FRIDAY! That’s exciting.

Maybe we’ll have to do a little dancing of our own in Long Beach, Chicago, Nashville and Ocean City. Anyone want to join us?

Hongdae Mapping

We’ve mentioned before how exceptionally cool Hongdae, our Seoul neighborhood is. The neighborhood outside the front gate of Hongik University (Hong-ik Dae-hakyo) is what is known as Hongdae. Hongik University is most famous for its art program, so the Hongdae area is full of arty boutiques, cafes, galleries, performance spaces, and other off-beat holes-in-the-wall.

Hongdae also has a wild club scene that goes until sunrise every weekend, year round. Unfortunately, the club scene is all that most foreigners get to know of Hongdae, so we have decided to begin mapping the area, reviewing and photographing our favorite spots. As we build content, we’ll eventually compile the information into a resource to share with other foreigners (as any such map in English is non-existent, as far as we have found).

We’ve also seen multi-national chains taking a strong foot-hold along the streets and alley-ways, so we thought this mapping project could be a way to help support local, Korean businesses. The map will be a while in coming, but we wanted to at least share a few photos from our first outing.

Adam’s new art is finished.  Here it is!

Adam's finished Korean tattoo- 5 Mountains

Marked by Korea

Posted by Jessica on May 29th, 2008

Adam and I have lived in Korea for two years now, and we plan to stay a few more. We’ve had a significant experience– Korea has really gotten under our skin and left its mark.

This week, Adam and I have gotten His & Hers Korean tattoos. Koreans are nature lovers, so their art and poetry is based on symbols from nature. We wanted to acknowledge the significance of this place in our lives with a piece of beautiful, traditional Korean art.

Adam’s is still a work in progress, to be finished next Monday. Long ago, Seoul was chosen as the capitol of Korea based on geomancy because of the placement of these 5 mountains and the power they were believed to harness energetically. Then the Gyeongbogung Palace was placed strategically in the center of these beautiful mountains. Adam’s tattoo design with 5 Mountains comes from a painting that always sat behind the King’s throne. It’s obviously associated with strength and power. Now, it is also on the 10,000 Won bill with a portrait of King Sejong who invented the Hangul alphabet (which we love). The painting of the 5 Mountains is very significant in Korea and now for us as well.

Initially, we both planned to get the above tattoo, but as we talked with the artist, we realized the distinctively masculine symbolism of it. In wanting a more feminine symbol, we decided the feminine shape was equally important. The orchid is an excellent symbol of femininity, beauty, virtue and grace, and the Korean brush-style has very feminine, curvy lines that go well on the body. I have loved orchids for a long time, Adam wore one on his lapel in our wedding, and I carried several in my bouquet. Orchid plants are plentiful in Korea. It is one of the four plants Koreans call the “Four Noble Ones” that symbolize the seasons– orchid is Spring.

To tie our tattoos together, we have a matching poem and artist’s stamp. The poem, by Pak Mok-Wol translates to:

“The hills surround me, and
Tell me to live my life,
Sowing the seeds,
Tilling the land.”

The Poem

In Korean art and calligraphy, the artist signs the painting with his stamp. Tying our artwork together is our family stamp with the Korean “useum namu” which translates to “laughing tree”– Lofbomm! :).

p.s. We have uploaded photos from the tattoo process. Our artist, Raon was incredible. Equally incredible was our friend Lucy who gave so much of her time to translating for us.

Human Tetris

Posted by Adam on May 26th, 2008

We haven’t posted a video in awhile, so I thought I’d share this little bit of brilliance with you. How clever. Jessica and I are both Tetris dorks, so we really appreciated this. BTW, if you have a Mac (as you should), be sure to check out Quinn. It’s a really slick freeware version of Tetris.

Photos are back!

Posted by Adam on May 25th, 2008

After a fair amount of headache, heartache, and wresting with WordPress, our photos page is now alive and well once again! Many thanks to Joe Tan for writing the Flickr Photo Album plugin (which is truly awesome), and then for taking the time to help me troubleshoot and fix it. Without a place to display them, I haven’t felt very motivated to take many photos lately, so the stream of images should be resuming to the usual flow soon

We have a few new sets up right how. Below is a picture of us before our recent outing to see an incredible performance of the opera, Turandot, at the Sejong Arts Center.

Jessica has also uploaded some of our more vintage photos from our early days together, so if you want to take a trip down memory lane, you can check those out as well.

Happy couple

Enjoy!
